En abril de 2019 se realizó la primera exposición del programa de residencias  Mind the Gap, desarrollada por los artistas invitados Jorge Martín y Pei-Fen Lee. Su propuesta expositiva, titulada An Archeology of the Sun, respondía tanto al espacio expositivo asignado como al entorno general de Tenerife.

 

Sirviéndose del carácter romántico de ruina que presenta el Espacio Cultural el Tanque ( que antes de ser convertido en sala expositiva sirvió para un propósito industrial relacionado con la energía) y de su atmósfera sacralizada (por sus dimensiones y aspecto los artistas lo han relacionado con la idea de templo), los artistas desarrollaron una propuesta artística que reflexiona desde el punto de vista antropológico y sociológico sobre uno de los reclamos turísticos primordiales en canarias; el sol. Los artistas reflexionan sobre qué impulsos seguimos los seres humanos en nuestra búsqueda del sol, el valor y carácter de nuestra experiencia en relación con el astro y cuáles son las narrativas que existen detrás de este deseo. Siguiendo estas cuestiones, Jorge y Pei Fen se embarcaron en un intento utópico y de tintes arqueológicos que implicó un ejercicio de autoconciencia  y de relaciones sociales, y que incluyó innumerables niveles de discursos y actores. El Espacio Cultural el Tanque sirvió como elemento clave para esta experiencia, por su doble carácter como lugar de reflexión y de reunión. Su arquitectura se convirtió en el anclaje de un diagrama que creció tanto de forma física como en la web.

 

Para ello, Pei-Fen y Jorge construyeron una video instalación, en la que utilizaron material videográfico grabado por ellos mismos, relacionado con su propia experiencia del sol en Tenerife, y nutrido por actividades y entrevistas que realizaron mano a mano con habitantes locales y visitantes turistas en la isla. A ello se unieron mapas de tráfico aéreo, migraciones y movimientos solares obtenidos en la web. Los artistas también tomaron fotografías polaroid en diversos puntos de la isla que incorporaron a la instalación, pegándolas en algunas de las columans del espacio.

Además de participar físicamente en la elaboración de los videos, la audiencia fue invitada a participar en una plataforma online creada por los artistas, en la que entre todos dibujaron con comentarios, micro-historias, imágenes, y videos, un mapa orgánico de la experiencia del sol en Tenerife. Nuevos contenidos eran continuamente subidos a esta plataforma, facilitando que que cada semana nuevas historias se proyectaran en la video instalación durante la exposición.

The first edition of the Mind the Gap Residency Programme was held in April 2019. The invited artists, Pei-Fen Lee and Jorge Martin, developed their exhibition proposal ‘An Archeology of the Sun’ responding to both the exhibition space and the environment of Tenerife.

The exhibition space ‘Espacio Cultural el Tanque’ has a romantic character of ruin (it had a former industrial use related to energy storage before being reconverted into an art space) and a sacralised atmosphere (due to its dimensions and appearance the artists related it to the idea of a temple). They used these features to develop an art project that reflected from an anthropological and sociological point of view about one of the most significant attractions of Tenerife as a touristic destination: the sun. The artists reflected about what impulses we follow as human beings in our pursuit of the sun, as well as the value and character of our experience in relation to it, and what the narratives behind this desire are. Following these questions, the artists involved themselves in a utopian endeavour that implied an exercise of self-consciousness and social relations, and which included multiple levels of discourses and agents. ‘Espacio Cultural el Tanque’ was used as a key element for this experience, because of its double character as a place for reflection and gathering. Its architecture became an anchorage to develop a diagram that grew both physically and online.

Pei-Fen and Jorge made a video installation using videos they filmed around the island, which were related to their sun experience in Tenerife. They interviewed local inhabitants and international tourists, who also fed their stories. Aerial traffic and migration maps and images of solar movements, which they obtained online, were also added to their installation. The artists also took some polaroid photographies around the island, which they included in the installation by sticking them on some of the columns of the space.

Besides of participating physically in the making of videos and interviews, the audience was invited to take part in an online platform created by the artists. New contents were continuously uploaded to that platform, which facilitated that each week new stories were projected in the video installation during the exhibition. By contributing to this platform with their images, comments, stories and videos, the audience and the artists created together an organic map of the sun experience in Tenerife.
